Hallway Conversations

By Shun Shifu Weaver - Posted on 11 December 2009

One of the things I love are the short little hallway conversations where students connect. Normally I'm not a part of them but seem to catch just the tail end. And that's the way I like it.

They are great because they really give little clues as to what's going on in the new students mind and they are often very funny from my perspective.

So last night I ran into one between two new students. One of the students has twenty some years in the martial arts but just started Shou' Shu' a few weeks ago. The other is completely new to martial arts entirely.

So as i enter the hall the second student relays to me how he had been telling his wife about the experience. How it seemed to him that it was like he was studying this ancient fighting system which was much like what he would imagine was taught hundreds of years ago.

My response "Um, yeah"

So he goes on a bit and the other students confers.

I respond again with a "Yep that's pretty much it"

So I guess that's what's so hilarious to me. The perception of what people expect from martial arts and what they actually get when they try out Shou' Shu'. It's a fighting art and that's extremely uncommon. It's also a place that's fun and respectful. No attitudes.

No emphasis on sport. No show. Just learning a true fighting art.

Next they asked me what I thought would happen with MMA. I gave the only answer I could. I don't really follow it so I don't really know. I suppose it will go the way of WWF (Is that what it's still called?)

Again blowing the perceptions.

I guess when I think about that it makes me pretty happy. We just do what we do, Shou' Shu'. Nothing else. And that's a good thing.
